Er. Udayan Shrouti CEO, Libra Agencies delivered a monthly lecture at Indian Water Works Association (IWWA) Nagpur Chapter on the topic” Industrial Water Treatment Focus – ZLD” on 30.01.2023
The need, and how presently industries are ensuring Zero Liquid Discharge (ZLD) was lucidly explained with a case study. The speaker further elaborated on how the energy intensity and hence water requirement at energy generation source increases at every step of water recovery. It is important to establish a harmony between energy and environment to ensure global optimal instead of local was highly appreciated by the august audience. The new paradigm on focusing of recovery of value-added product from the wastewater and water as a by-product will lead to a universal adaptation of the zero liquid discharge was also shared by the speaker. A large audience consisting of IWWA office bearers, IWWA members, and industry representatives deliberated on this idea. IWWA is actively considering a role out of a new initiative to further expand the concept of wealth from Waste to build a technology based competitive industry.
Our CEO Er. Udayan Shrouti – The Water Pandit highlighted the need, various nuances of the present-day technology and implementation challenges for reclamation of most precious resource – water.
Water is a precious resource, and with increasing industrialization, its demand is rapidly increasing. There is immediate need for sustainable water use and ZLD plays a very important role in achieving this goal.
ZLD is a water treatment process that aims to minimize water wastage and eliminate the discharge of liquid waste into the environment. ZLD can help reduce water wastage by up to 95%, and can help industries achieve zero liquid discharge. ZLD is an effective water treatment process, it requires a significant amount of investment and expertise.
A case study on reclamation of wastewater for the purpose of process use in a Textile Mill was presented. The presentation highlighted the technology deployed it’s various operational, functional aspects and benefits of the technology, including reduced water wastage and improved environmental compliance.
It is of paramount importance to establish harmony between Energy and Environment axis. At every unit process of wastewater purification significant contribution is of energy. The energy contribution per unit of wastewater processing increases after every unit process. Hence in the pursuit of local environmental compliance in relation to wastewater, the global environmental compliance in terms of air pollution and fresh water requirement needs to be factored in. The new paradigm on focusing of recovery of value-added product from the wastewater and water as a by-product at the beginning of the pipe at every process point rather than dumping all wastewaters in a common pipeline and deploying effluent treatment plant (ETP) at the end of the pipe will lead to a universal adaptation of the zero liquid discharge at much more affordable costs and assist in establishing harmony between environment and energy.
Overall, the event was a great success, with subject experts, industry representatives and engineering students coming together to discuss the importance of industrial water treatment and the role of ZLD in achieving sustainable water use. The Indian Water Works Association deserves credit for organizing such an informative and insightful event, and we hope that it will help raise awareness about the need for responsible water use in industries.
